Wine country before lunch.

The bay owns the evening.
The sun drops behind Point Loma and the water takes the colour of the sky with it. Dinner boats push off around seven, the Gaslamp fills up by nine, and a guide is still walking a group through Old Town while the taco windows are open.
Tacos first, everything else after.
The border sits twenty minutes south and every menu knows it. Fish tacos off a griddle in Old Town, a six-stop crawl through the Gaslamp, carne asada in Tijuana with somebody who knows which stand is worth the queue.
Seven caves, one at a time.
The sandstone cliffs north of the Cove hide seven sea caves, and the only door is at water level. Tandem kayaks go out most mornings before the wind, past a beach of sea lions that could not care less. The snorkel version swaps the paddle for a mask over the kelp.
Old Town, then the fleet.
California’s first Spanish settlement is five blocks of adobe, courtyard tables and a cemetery with a story on every stone. Downtown at the pier the Midway sits with its hangar deck open and grey hulls moored behind it. Two hundred years of San Diego in one afternoon.
